The price was $1.74 per litre (that's $6.58 per gallon for my American friends).

Not surprisingly, gas prices are pretty high up here in the Arctic. I don't own a vehicle, as it is a small enough town that I can walk, hitch a ride, or take a cab for $5 anywhere in town. So I don't follow gas prices closely, but while my parents were visiting me last month, we took a trip to the gas station. The price was $1.74 per litre (that's $6.58 per gallon for my American friends). That's almost $170 for 97 litres (25.6 gallons). There are a few places to buy gas in town. In addition to the two below, there's also a relatively new gas cardlock facility where you can get about 10 cents off per litre (http://www.inuvikcardlockfacility.com/Contact-Us.html), but I haven't been there yet so I don't have photos. My parents used it a few times and thought it was great.

Inuvik has a new school, which includes all grades (K-12) and cost $110 million. I believe it is the second largest building project in the Northwest Territories. It was designed by Pin/Taylor Architects and built by Dowland Construction. It features glass walls and special design features to let in as much sunlight as possible during the winter, and shades on the windows to stop the glare when the sun is bright. School started on Monday, September 10 and replaces the two old school buildings (elementary and high school). Prior to opening, I got a sneak peak tour of the inside. Below are the pictures. I wish I could go back to high school now! I had a great trip to Alaska (I drove one way with my parents - through to Fairbanks, and flew back to Inuvik), but it's been busy since my return. So all I can manage is to post some pictures of the GORGEOUS fall colours we saw on our drive down the Dempster Highway.
Enjoy the photos and have a great weekend! |
