Inuvik has a new school, which includes all grades (K-12) and cost $110 million. I believe it is the second largest building project in the Northwest Territories. It was designed by Pin/Taylor Architects and built by Dowland Construction. It features glass walls and special design features to let in as much sunlight as possible during the winter, and shades on the windows to stop the glare when the sun is bright.
School started on Monday, September 10 and replaces the two old school buildings (elementary and high school). Prior to opening, I got a sneak peak tour of the inside. Below are the pictures. I wish I could go back to high school now!

The trees are originally seedlings from this area, were taken to BC for growing, and have now come back up for use at the school.
The plan for how the furniture will be placed.
The lockers in the high school area. Notice the tops are sloping so students can't leave papers, shoes or books up there.
Stairwell with seating by the window.
The classrooms have sliding boards that go up and down to reveal shelving. Each room also has an electronic smart board.
One of two gyms. Notice the artwork - the outlines show different Arctic games that are popular in the north.
The locker room with showers, including one with handicap access.
The music room ready to be set up.
Cooking stations. I want to cook there!
Washrooms.
Stuffed animals ready for display in the library.
The hallways in the elementary section.
Outside the elementary section, there is special soft flooring for the kids to play.
No more SAMS? But I have such fond memories there! Still, it's pretty impressive.

Wow! Very fancy! I haven't lived in Inuvik since 1978, but have very fond memories of it, the schools, the MacKenzie Delta Highway before it went all the way, taking the ice road to Aklavik in the winter and leaving our marks in the snow banks of the road lol. Many many good times/memories for the 9 years we were posted there. Go Ookpiks!!!!
