I will do a separate post soon describing the grocery stores in Inuvik and the prices of everyday foods. But today I am featuring "The Fruit Truck Guy". Every few weeks, a guy called Bill (officially The Fruitman Ltd.) makes the journey from Vancouver up to Inuvik at the end of the Dempster Highway with a truck full of fruit (and a few other things like cereal and cheese). Then he heads back South and does the whole thing again three weeks later.
I saw Bill parked in an empty lot down from our office and decided to stop in and pick up some fresh fruit and veggies. He's got some good-quality produce, but if you want the best pick of the crop, you want to get there during the first few days.
When you see this sign on the side of the road, you know Bill has arrived!
My bill came to $53.24 for these fruits and veggies, along with a big block of cheese and a dozen eggs. It's not cheap, but it sure is nice to have a choice in fresh produce, even though the grocery stores do have a decent variety.
