The price was $1.74 per litre (that's $6.58 per gallon for my American friends).

Not surprisingly, gas prices are pretty high up here in the Arctic. I don't own a vehicle, as it is a small enough town that I can walk, hitch a ride, or take a cab for $5 anywhere in town. So I don't follow gas prices closely, but while my parents were visiting me last month, we took a trip to the gas station. The price was $1.74 per litre (that's $6.58 per gallon for my American friends). That's almost $170 for 97 litres (25.6 gallons). There are a few places to buy gas in town. In addition to the two below, there's also a relatively new gas cardlock facility where you can get about 10 cents off per litre (http://www.inuvikcardlockfacility.com/Contact-Us.html), but I haven't been there yet so I don't have photos. My parents used it a few times and thought it was great.

I know - Europeans think we're crazy to complain about high prices, but it's all tied in to what you're used to, cost of living, wages, etc. No one living this far north should be shocked by prices!

Yeah, it's $1.50/L here in oz right now but when we lived in the UK it was regularly $2.60/L. Ouch. Lets just say you take fewer trips whenever you can while there. 10/29/2012 04:47:39 am
I'm just glad I don't own a car... the town is so small and a cab is just $5 anywhere in town. It's probably a good thing to be forced to think carefully before driving around everywhere! Leave a Reply. |
