There are several peculiarities about living in the far North, particularly related to staying safe in the frigid temperatures. The peculiarity that I will highlight for you today is the cold sensor red light.
When I moved into my rental house in January, I noticed a naked red bulb propped in the front window, plugged into the nearest outlet. I had no idea what it was until my landlord explained that it is a sensor that detects when the temperature drops dangerously low in the house, sending a message to my neighbours that I may be in danger of hypothermia and signalling that I need to be rescued.
I tested it to be sure it works by leaving my doors open while I took my garbage out one night. It works!
I can only hope that if my furnace breaks while I'm sleeping that I have an insomniac neighbour who is looking out the window in the middle of the night, or that someone happens to be out on a late-night walk...
I wanted to learn more about this little gadget, so I did what any lazy person would do... Google! You may not want to do this at work, as you get some interesting results from a search for "red light cold temperature", including a description of the unfortunate effect that cold weather has on business in the red light district in Amsterdam...
I quickly gave up on my research, and will instead satisfy myself with showing you another picture of my very own red light district.
